National numbers for Australian businesses

1300 and 1800 Numbers for Australian Businesses

One number for the whole country, with no city attached. A 1300 number costs callers a local rate; an 1800 number costs them nothing. Either one is $100 inc GST to allocate and $10 a month ex GST after that, and it rings wherever you say: the app on your mobile, a team, a queue, or the AI Receptionist after hours.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓Any Australian business can have one, including a sole trader. A new 1300 or 1800 number is $100 inc GST once, then $10 a month ex GST, on the same account as your other numbers.
  • ✓Who pays is the only difference. 1300: the caller pays a local rate and you pay 20c a minute. 1800: the caller pays nothing and you pay 20c a minute. Both receive calls only.
  • ✓It rings wherever you choose. Your mobile app, a group of staff at once, a queue with hold music, a desk phone, or the AI Receptionist, with different rules by time of day.
  • ✓Keep the one you have. An existing 1300 or 1800 number ports to Click2Call for $100 inc GST and can take up to 30 days; it keeps working until the day it moves.
  • ✓Recording, transcripts and the AI are included. Call recording, AI transcripts and summaries, the AI Receptionist and the Answer Agent come with the number. No lock-in, prepaid, 7-day free trial.

What a 1300 number is and how it routes

A 1300 number is a ten-digit Australian number that is not tied to any city. When someone dials it, the network sends the call to the destination you have set, which can be anywhere in the country. For the caller it feels like a local call; for you it is a front door you can move without changing the number on your signage, vehicles or service agreements.

On Click2Call the number is a line on the same phone system as your local numbers. You decide where it rings in the portal: the Secure VoIP app on one mobile, a ring group of several people, a queue that holds callers with music and announcements until someone is free, a desk phone in reception, or the AI Receptionist, which asks what the caller needs and puts them through by voice. Rules can change by time of day, so the number rings the office at nine and the Answer Agent at nine at night.

What a 1300 number cannot do is make calls. It receives only. Businesses pair it with a local number, which is free to allocate and $10 a month, or with a $25 user, so staff can call customers back showing a number the customer recognises.

1300 vs 1800 vs 13 numbers

Three kinds of national number exist in Australia. Click2Call sells the first two; the third is explained so you can rule it in or out.

NumberDigitsCaller paysYou pay on Click2CallBest for
130010A local call rate; free on most mobile plans$100 inc GST once, $10 a month, 20c a minute incomingA national presence where sharing the cost is fine
180010Nothing, from any phone$100 inc GST once, $10 a month, 20c a minute incomingSupport lines and campaigns where no cost to the caller matters
136A local call rateNot sold by Click2Call; carries a large annual ACMA chargeNational brands that advertise a six-digit number

For most small businesses the choice is 1300 or 1800, and it comes down to the caller. If your callers are consumers ringing from mobiles, a 1300 number costs them nothing on most plans and you pay the same as you would on 1800. If you want the word "free" on the number, or your callers ring from landlines, choose 1800. Either can be added later, and both can run side by side on one account.

What it costs on Click2Call

  • ✓New 1300 or 1800 number: $100 inc GST, once
  • ✓Then $10 a month ex GST, prepaid, month to month
  • ✓Incoming calls: 20c a minute ex GST, 1300 and 1800 alike
  • ✓Two calls at once per account; extra channels $3 a month each
  • ✓Calling out: add a local number ($10, free to allocate) or a $25 user with 300 minutes
  • ✓Porting an existing 1300 or 1800 number: $100 inc GST

There are no setup fees beyond the allocation, no minimum call spend and no contract. Every feature of the phone system, including recording, transcripts, queues and the AI, is included with the number rather than sold as an add-on.

A worked example

A care provider with a 1300 number on every service agreement, two coordinators on $25 users who call families all day, and a local Adelaide number for people who prefer one. The 1300 number takes about 300 minutes of incoming calls a month.

  • 1300 number: $10.00
  • 2 users at $25: $50.00
  • Adelaide 08 number: $10.00
  • 300 incoming 1300 minutes at 20c: $60.00
  • New 1300 number, once: $100 inc GST
  • $130 a month ex GST, plus $100 once

Who uses a 1300 number

Disability, NDIS and aged care providers are the most common 1300 customers at Click2Call. Participants, families and support coordinators spread across regions all ring the one number printed on the paperwork, and the provider's contact team, sometimes working offshore, answers it from the app. Local numbers for each region sit alongside it for the people who prefer to see a local code.

Trades that cover several regions use a 1300 number on the van and the website so that a customer in the next town does not hesitate over an unfamiliar area code. Online businesses that ship nationally use one because a 02 or 07 number would make them look like a shop in one city. Support lines use 1800 numbers so that nobody is put off ringing.

A single-location business usually does not need one. A local number does the same job, is free to allocate and costs nothing for incoming calls. The business phone numbers page compares all four kinds.

Porting an existing 1300 or 1800 number

If you already hold a 1300 or 1800 number, bring it across rather than printing new stationery. Porting costs $100 inc GST and can take up to 30 days, longer than a local number, because national numbers move between carriers through a separate process. Your number keeps working with your current provider the whole time and cuts over on the day it moves.

Set up and test Click2Call on a new number first, then lodge the port from the portal once you are happy. Do not cancel the old service until the port has completed. The number porting page and the porting guide explain what the losing carrier will ask for.

In ads and on your Google Business Profile

A 1300 number suits advertising that runs nationally, because it gives one number to print everywhere and no clue about where you are. Many businesses keep the local number on the Google Business Profile, where a local code matches what people expect from a map listing, and put the 1300 number on the website, print and radio.

Because each number reports separately in the portal, a second $10 number used only in one campaign tells you how many calls that campaign produced. The AI call summaries then show what those callers wanted.

After hours and overflow

A national number rings at national hours. A caller in Perth is still at work when a Brisbane office has gone home, so the question is what the 1300 number does at six in the evening. On Click2Call the usual answer is the Answer Agent: it rings the on-call person first, and if nobody picks up it takes the caller's name, number and reason, can book a time, and emails a summary with the transcript. In the morning every missed call is a message rather than a gap.

During the day the AI Receptionist can answer in the business name and route callers by what they say, so a provider with coordinators for different regions does not need a recorded menu. Calls that arrive while every channel is busy wait in a queue with hold music and a position announcement, or overflow to the Answer Agent. The AI Receptionist page explains the three AI layers and what each does.
